Let's Go to the Zoo!

By Todd Chyba on April 3, 2015

Who doesn’t love a great zoo?  Especially our own Sunset Zoo!  One of my first opportunities to volunteer here in Manhattan was to join the Friends of Sunset Zoo (FOSZ) Board.  The Board was looking for a new Treasurer and I was ready to get involved.  My two girls thought I was pretty great when I explained my new volunteer position with the FOSZ Board.  They thought I was going to be working at the zoo and were wondering if I would be feeding the animals!

That was over 3 years ago.  It has been wonderful to watch and to participate in all the great things that Sunset Zoo has accomplished in those few short years.  The Nature Exploration Center was built, the Zoo Hospital was remodeled and updated, the Gibbons Exhibit phase 1 and 2 were built and the list continues to grow.

While on the FOSZ Board I have met some great people who share a passion for this community and the zoo, and I’ve been able to make some great friendships along the way.  It is amazing the support that this community has for the zoo.  I have also been able to observe the many diverse populations that the zoo reaches—from the families who are stationed at Fort Riley, to college students and university employees to the parents and grandparents who enjoy a beautiful afternoon at the zoo.

I have had a great time supporting Sunset Zoo at its two major fundraising events: Wine in the Wild, which is held annually in early June; and Brew at the Zoo, held annually in August.  Proceeds from these two events help the zoo with projects like those listed above as well as with conservation efforts that the zoo and the friends group directly support.

If you haven’t been out to Sunset Zoo lately I would encourage you to go out and see all the great things they have going on as well as all the changes that have occurred in the last several years.

Speaking of upcoming events, Sunset Zoo and The Trust Company will be co-hosting the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours reception at the Zoo on Wednesday, April 8th from 5:30-7:00 pm.  We would love to see you there!  Click here to register, or for more information on the zoo and its great programs, click here.
